Announcement of an NSF-Sponsored Workshop on Teaching "Ethics and Computing" Sunday August 8 -- Friday August 13, 1999 Tampa, Florida Target audience. Like the 1998 workshop, this workshop targets faculty who are or soon will be teaching "ethics and computing" material to Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Information Systems majors. The explicit aim of the workshop is to develop teaching materials that have concrete relevance to undergraduates about to enter the computing profession. The orientation is to have a level of technical depth that is relevant to CS/CE/IS majors. Some participants may have already taught such a course, but want to improve on what they have done and pick up new ideas. Others may be planning to teach such a course in the future, and looking for approaches to the course as well as topics to be covered. Still others may be looking for ethics-related modules that can be integrated into different traditional core Computer Science courses. Goal. The purpose of this workshop is to help faculty to develop and teach "ethics and computing" materials that provide rigorous, relevant and effective learning experiences. Participants will receive a notebook of resource materials at the beginning of the workshop. The major part of the workshop is devoted to developing specific topical material relevant to ethics and computing. There will also be sessions on the use of modern, effective teaching methods. Participants will develop model activities and assignments to use in their own teaching and share with others. The materials developed will become part of a web-based resource for faculty. Schedule. The Workshop on Teaching "Ethics and Computing" is scheduled for Sunday, August 8-th through Friday, August 13-th of 1999. The workshop will begin with a dinner session on Sunday August 8, and end with a dinner session on Friday August 13. The workshop will take place on the campus of the University of South Florida. Participants will receive support for housing and meals during the workshop, plus a stipend of $50 per day for five days. Participants will be responsible for their own travel to and from the workshop. Attendance is limited to 24 participants. The workshop is funded by the National Science Foundation, Division of Undergraduate Education, Undergraduate Faculty Enhancement grant DUE-9752792, to Professor Bowyer at the University of South Florida. Opinions expressed are those of the organizers/participants and not necessarily those of the Foundation. Application. Potential participants should send a one-page application to kwb@csee.usf.edu by 30 April 1999. The statement should describe the course(s) being taught or to be taught, the degree program (CS/CE/EE/IS) in which the course is taught, and indicate that the participant will be able to attend the entire workshop. Questions. Questions should be directed to Professor Kevin Bowyer, Computer Science and Engineering, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL 33620. kwb@csee.usf.edu 813-974-3032 (phone) or -5456 (fax).
